An AHP Dementia Webinar
Lots of ideas and information to think over and look how to apply locally
All the speakers spoke with real enthusiasm for their work – very easy to listen to. Well done to them all.
Every two months we work together as an allied health professionals community to develop, for you, a national AHP Dementia Webinar where we share the work and practice of allied health professionals in Scotland and our many partners and colleagues. Our vision for the webinars is “through working in partnership, we can all improve outcomes for people that really matter”.
The AHP Dementia webinar in August 2023 we were joined by occupational therapy and physiotherapy colleagues, sharing the importance of occupation to support health and wellbeing and live well with dementia. Our guest presenters were:
- Fran Hamilton, occupational therapist, Trainer and Consultant
- Susanne Syme, physiotherapist, Care Homes
- Michelle Murray, occupational therapist, Inverclyde
- Paula Graham, occupational therapist, Inverclyde

Please leave any comments or questions for any of our speakers at the end of this blog or email us at AHPDementia@alzscot.org
We invite the participants at the end of each webinar to share a take away action from the webinar and use in your practice, or life, going forward. Here are a short selection of your replies. We wish you every success in following up your ideas and inspirations that you shared with us.
Hadn’t heard of the Journey through Dementia groups or the Connecting people Connecting Support online. Will definitely be looking at the website and telling people about it.
A reminder of the importance of continuing new learning and building a sense of self-efficacy for people with dementia and how such a wonderful resource can be used to support this – I’ll be recommending the website and materials to others as well as using them myself with patients.
As a student, I will look into this as an intervention type for future practice in the area of older adults with a diagnosis of dementia
Looking at integrating more therapeutic intervention in the community mental health team rather than just assessment.
Further exploration of connecting people connecting support website and linking with Susanne about her work in care homes
Would like to see co working using the resource in Alzheimer Scotland brain health and resource centres.
