“Podiatry Talking Mats” from development to practice – AHP Dementia Webinar

[ad_1]

The possibilities of talking mats are endless, this is not just a tool for patients with an official communication issue but a tool that enables patients to share information. Thank you to all!

Every two months we work together as an allied health professionals community to develop, for you, a national AHP Dementia Webinar where we share the work and practice of allied health professionals in Scotland. Our vision for the webinars is “through working in partnership, we can all improve outcomes for people that really matter”. Our AHP Dementia webinar in February 2023 was called Podiatry Talking Mats” from development to practice with guest presenter Karen Mellon, Podiatry Clinical Services Manager, NHS Fife.

Your Q&A

During the webinar, participants asked lots of great questions and today we are posting the replies from our webinar host. Please leave any further comments on this blog post for Karen to continue the conversation with you at the end of this blog or email us at AHPDementia@alzscot.org

Question: Can it cause contention with other care providers and family, hopefully not

Answer: So far my experience has been very positive. I have undertaken sessions when families are present and many have been very interested in the tool and the information shared. It is a way to enhance and support communication and one which families and carers can be trained to use. There is potential the views shared by the patient may be different from family members, but it is important to understand this is the person’s opinions and their voice is being heard.

Question: Are Talking Mats available for Care Management – Older Adults?

Answer: Yes, I would recommend looking on the Talking Mats website to see what training session is available. Once trained anyone can use the resource to support communication. I am aware carers both in the community and in care home settings have undertook the training and are using in practice.

Question: Where do you see it going for podiatry in the future

Answer: This set has been designed for use with patients at risk of ulceration or who have already ulcerated. I believe there is much more scope for development for various patient groups and treatment options. Several podiatrist have completed the training and nail surgery in particular has been identified as an area for development. I can see use with our child and young people’s service and our musculoskeletal service moving forward.

Question: Do you store the mat with patients records?

Answer: Yes. Once a session has been completed, an image of the mat is taken and uploaded to our notes. This mat is then used to create a person centred care plan. A copy of the mat can also be given to the patient/family/carers so they can reflect back on the discussion and action plan.

Question: How can we get a copy of this talking mat?

Answer: For the Podiatry Talking Mats there is specific training you can attend, the information is available on the Talking Mats website. As part of the training you will be given the Podiatry set to use moving forward. You can also purchase the online resource and use it electronically as well.

We invited you all at the end of each webinar to offer the speaker feedback, here are a short selection of your replies. We wish you every success in following up your ideas and inspirations that you shared with us.

Flexibility of the use of talking mats and their potential use for families in communicating with someone with communication problems

Ask if our podiatry colleagues have heard about this work

Look at talking mats with more detail in dementia

I am a speech and language therapist and was curious to see how a podiatrist had found this practical, concrete approach to support patient care. So good to see AHP colleagues embracing the benefits of talking mats and applying to their area of practice. Well done to the speaker for taking the initiative and now for spreading the word!

The enthusiasm oozing from Karen – in particular about being able to provide truly patient centred care with the help of talking mats.

Was excellent presentation and very informative.  thank you.  Was good to see that the talking mats can be developed further if needed and if gap identified.

Good partnership working.
